31 DAYS OF FALL: Apple Butter

Day 4: Apple Butter

Every year, we head out to the pumpkin patch and I end up buying a couple of jars of apple butter.  I absolutely LOVE it and have been wanting to figure out how to make it for a while.  After scouring recipes online, I settled on something I could make in the crock pot.  Thanks to Changing My Destiny for the recipe!

APPLE BUTTER IN THE CROCK-POT

1 doz. apples...I honestly don't remember which kind I used, Gala, maybe?

1/2 cup of water

1/4 cup of brown sugar

1/2 tsp of cinnamon

1/2 tsp of all spice

STEP 1:

Wash and peel your apples.  Core them and chop them up.  Mix them with the sugar, cinnamon and all spice.  I did not make exact measurements...I just scooped and dumped.

Don't forget to enlist little helpers :-)

STEP 2:

Dump it all in the crock pot with the water...turn it on high and let it sit for about 6 hours.

I propped the lid after about 6 hours to let some of the extra juice/water evaporate...it was a little too runny and I was going for something a little thicker.  It took about 30 minutes to reach the consistency I was looking for.

STEP 3:

Mash or blend the apples...or leave it just the way it is.  I took my potato masher to it and liked how it mostly broke down, but I still had a few soft chunks.

STEP 4:

Let mixture cool and place in storage containers....I used plastic Ball jars and froze one of them.  It didn't last very long and I found myself thawing that jar in about 3 days!

STEP 5:

Enjoy!

I hope you get a chance to try this!  It was SO cheap and easy to make and I love that I was able to control everything that went into it...no high fructose corn syrup here!! (not that brown sugar is any better, I know!)

It's so tasty and delicious and I hope you enjoy it!

  3. Couple questions:

    1. Did you peel the skin off the apples?
    2. How many jars did it take to put it all away? What size jars?
    3. Do your kids like it?

  4. #1-Yes, peel and core the apples...otherwise they won't break down. I chopped them up into tiny pieces.
#2-I had small apples, so 2 of those little freezer jam jars...they are 16oz size
#3-Yep, kids love it...it's like cinnamon apple sauce but a little more concentrated :-)

    Have fun making it!
